Day 1: Fes to Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)

Our guide will pick you up at 8 a.m. from your Riad or hotel in Fes, and we will begin our 3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to the Erg Chebbi dunes, passing through the Middle Atlas, Ifrane, Azrou, cedar forests, and the Ziz Valley gorge. It is an interesting route in a beautiful landscape that provides great photo opportunities. After sampling Moroccan cuisine in Midelt, we will travel to the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, where you will ride a camel for two hours to view the sunset from 250 meters above sea level. We stay at a Berber luxury campsite for the night, where dinner is freshly prepared and served under the stars. After dinner, it is always nice to gather around the fire for some drum music.

“The night in the Sahara desert is magical,” as the saying goes. So take a walk near the camp to take in the starry, magical sky!

Day 2: Erg Chebbi – Skoura – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

Our second day begins with a drive to Rissani town to explore the market. The road takes us to one of Morocco’s largest canyons, the Gorges of Todra, which is the most well-known direction for Moroccan rock climbers. We stop for lunch in Todra Gorges. We will do some walking later before heading to the other valley of Dades. The green fields of the valley contrast beautifully with the colors of the mountains. We will stay in a hotel for the last night of this 3 days desert tour from Fes.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Skoura – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

On the last day of our tour from Fes, we drive to the Rose Valley, which blooms in May. Off-roading through Skoura’s palm trees, where the architecture of the Kasbahs is spreading within the palm’s shadow, we make another stop in Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Morocco 3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech review

I had been dreaming about visiting the Sahara Desert for years, and this tour made that dream come true in the most beautiful way. The journey from Fes through the cedar forests and Berber villages was fascinating. Our guide, Hamid, shared so much insight about Moroccan culture, and we never felt rushed. The camel trek into the dunes at sunset felt surreal, like a scene from a movie. The desert camp was way more comfortable than I expected, with private tents, real beds, and even a hot shower! Thank you Sahara Golden Desert.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Dream Come True in the Sahara

This tour exceeded every expectation we had. It wasn’t just about the desert, though that was obviously a major highlight, but all the stops along the way made it really special. We visited Ifrane, saw wild monkeys in the cedar forest, and had mint tea with a Berber family. Our guide made us feel like part of his family. The desert camp was intimate and peaceful, with a stunning view of the dunes at sunrise. This tour is a must-do if you want an authentic and immersive experience. I still can’t believe how much we got to see and do in just three days. Thank you Mourad for having us.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Perfect Blend of Adventure and Culture

This 3-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech was honestly the most unforgettable part of our Moroccan adventure. From start to finish, everything was so well organized. Our driver, Youssef, was friendly, knowledgeable, and super accommodating. The drive through the Atlas Mountains was breathtaking, but nothing compares to the night we spent in the Sahara. Watching the sunset over the dunes and riding camels under a sky full of stars, pure magic. The desert camp was cozy and clean, with delicious food and traditional music by the fire. Highly recommend this tour if you want to experience the real Morocco!

Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour in 3 Days

If you’re thinking of booking a desert tour, DO IT. This one is absolutely worth it. The drive itself was beautiful, with changing landscapes that kept us glued to the windows. The camel ride was such a fun and unique way to enter the camp, and the staff there were incredibly kind and welcoming. We danced around the fire with locals, tried traditional food, and woke up to the most peaceful sunrise I’ve ever seen. What made this tour special, though, was the human connection; our guide treated us like friends, not just tourists. Memories for life!

About the Places in this 3 Days Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

About Fes – The Spiritual & Cultural Capital of Morocco

Often called the cultural heartbeat of Morocco, Fes (or Fez) is a city that captures the essence of Moroccan heritage, religion, and traditional craftsmanship. Founded in the 8th century, it is one of the oldest imperial cities in the country and home to the world’s oldest functioning university, Al-Qarawiyyin, established in 859 CE.

The most famous part of Fes is the Fes el-Bali Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest car-free urban zones in the world. Here, over 9,000 alleyways wind through bustling souks, centuries-old mosques, hidden riads, and artisan workshops. The smells of spices, leather, and traditional Moroccan cuisine fill the air, and the rhythm of life feels untouched by time.

Fes is especially known for its tanneries, where leather is dyed using age-old techniques in stone vats. Watching the process from above, with a sprig of mint in hand to soften the strong smell, is an unforgettable experience.

As the starting point of your desert tour, Fes offers travelers a deep immersion into Moroccan tradition and spirituality, and it sets the tone for the contrasts and discoveries that await across the Atlas Mountains and into the Sahara.

About Ifrane – Morocco’s Hidden Alpine Town

Nicknamed the “Little Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane is one of the country’s most unique and picturesque towns. Located at 1,665 meters above sea level in the Middle Atlas Mountains, it stands out for its European-style architecture, clean streets, red-roofed chalets, and neatly landscaped gardens — a stark contrast to the dusty medinas and desert towns found elsewhere in Morocco.

Originally established by the French in the 1930s as a mountain retreat, Ifrane was designed to mimic alpine resort towns in Europe, with a focus on order, cleanliness, and nature. Its cool climate and frequent snowfall in winter make it a popular escape for Moroccan families and tourists seeking relief from the summer heat or a chance to experience snow in North Africa.

One of Ifrane’s most iconic landmarks is the Lion Stone Statue, carved by a German prisoner during World War II. It has become a symbol of the town and a popular photo spot. Ifrane is also home to Al Akhawayn University, a prestigious English-speaking university that brings a cosmopolitan flair to the area.

Surrounded by cedar forests, lakes, and mountain trails, Ifrane is an ideal stop for travelers who love nature, hiking, or simply enjoying a peaceful atmosphere. In spring and autumn, the landscapes around the town are particularly breathtaking, painted with the changing colors of the season.

Whether you’re passing through on a desert tour or planning a longer mountain retreat, Ifrane offers a clean, relaxing, and charming glimpse into a very different side of Morocco.

About Azrou – Cedar Forests & Amazigh Heritage

Located just 30 kilometers south of Ifrane, Azrou is a peaceful town nestled in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Its name means “rock” in Tamazight (the Berber language), a reference to the prominent volcanic outcrop that stands at the town’s center. Azrou is surrounded by Morocco’s most extensive cedar forests, including the renowned Cèdre Gouraud Forest, named after a French general.

This area is especially famous for its population of Barbary macaques, a species of monkey native to North Africa. Travelers often stop here to observe these social animals in their natural habitat, making it a fun and family-friendly destination. Feeding the monkeys (with care) and taking photos in the towering cedar groves are popular activities.

Azrou also serves as a cultural hub for the Amazigh (Berber) communities of the region. Its weekly souk (market), held every Tuesday, is one of the most authentic in Morocco, offering handmade rugs, woolen garments, carved woodwork, and locally grown produce. Visitors can experience rural Moroccan life, taste local honey and mountain herbs, and interact with friendly locals.

With its blend of nature, culture, and calm atmosphere, Azrou is more than just a scenic stop — it’s a refreshing encounter with Morocco’s indigenous roots.

About Ziz Valley – Morocco’s Palm-Lined River Oasis

Stretching over 280 kilometers from the High Atlas Mountains down to the edge of the Sahara, the Ziz Valley is one of Morocco’s most spectacular and fertile regions. It’s a true oasis carved by the Ziz River, bordered by towering cliffs and dotted with thousands of date palms and traditional mudbrick kasbahs.

The valley’s unique geography creates a breathtaking contrast between the dry, rocky desert and the lush green ribbon of life winding through it. Along the route, travelers can enjoy sweeping views of palm groves, ancient irrigation systems, and ksour (fortified villages), many of which have stood for centuries.

Ziz Valley is especially famous for its date production, and if you’re traveling in late summer or early autumn, you may catch the local harvest in action. It’s also a great place to learn about traditional oasis agriculture, which relies on ingenious water management systems passed down through generations.

This part of the journey is a photographer’s dream and offers a quiet, authentic glimpse into the lives of southern Moroccan communities that thrive in harmony with nature.

About Erg Chebbi Dunes – The Gateway to the Sahara

The Erg Chebbi dunes, located near the town of Merzouga, are among Morocco’s most iconic natural wonders. These vast, golden sand dunes rise up to 250 meters high, stretching over 28 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide, a dreamlike landscape that epitomizes the romance of the Sahara Desert.

Unlike other parts of the desert that are rocky or flat, Erg Chebbi features classic rolling dunes that shift constantly with the wind, creating ever-changing patterns and shadows. A camel trek across these dunes at sunset is an unforgettable experience, offering panoramic views as the sky explodes with warm, glowing colors.

Staying overnight at a luxury Berber desert camp allows visitors to immerse themselves in the silence and majesty of the desert. Evenings are often filled with traditional music, storytelling, and stargazing — far from the light pollution of modern cities. This is where the true magic of the Sahara comes to life.

Beyond the dunes, the nearby town of Merzouga is home to a mix of Berber and Gnawa cultures. Many tours include stops at local villages, fossil shops, or even seasonal lakes where flamingos gather.

For anyone visiting Morocco, Erg Chebbi offers a deeply authentic desert experience that combines natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure.

About Todra Gorge – Morocco’s Towering Canyon of Stone

Located on the eastern side of the High Atlas Mountains, Todra Gorge is one of Morocco’s most awe-inspiring natural landscapes. Carved by the Todra River over millennia, the gorge features dramatic vertical limestone cliffs that soar up to 300 meters high and narrow to just 10 meters wide at their most dramatic point.

Todra Gorge has become a world-class rock climbing destination, attracting adventure seekers from around the globe. But even for non-climbers, the area is a must-see for its sheer scale and breathtaking views. A paved road runs through the gorge, and visitors can walk along the riverbed, which is especially refreshing in warmer months when the stream still flows between the cliffs.

Local Berber communities live in the surrounding villages, and many travelers take time to explore nearby homes, visit artisan workshops, or simply enjoy mint tea with locals. The gorge is also an excellent place to see traditional Berber architecture, carved into the rock or built from adobe.

A visit to Todra Gorge offers not only natural beauty but also a deeper connection to rural life in southern Morocco, making it a perfect stop between the desert and the mountains.

About Dades Valley – Land of Thousand Kasbahs

The Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” is a mesmerizing stretch of landscapes dotted with ancient fortresses, lush oases, and sculpted rock formations. Running along the Dades River between the High Atlas and Jbel Saghro ranges, it serves as a green artery through the otherwise arid southeastern part of Morocco.

What makes Dades Valley special is its surreal geology. The area features striking formations like the Monkey Fingers (locally known as “Pattes de Singe”), rounded rock outcrops shaped by wind and time into almost cartoonish figures. The valley’s red and pink cliffs shift color throughout the day, creating a visual spectacle.

In spring, the valley bursts into life with blooming almond trees, rose gardens, and fields of wheat. Travelers often stay in family-run guesthouses or kasbah hotels perched along the cliffs, offering spectacular views at sunrise and sunset.

Dades Valley is also rich in history and culture. Many of the kasbahs were once important strongholds along caravan routes, and local guides are happy to share their stories. If you’re looking to experience authentic Moroccan countryside with stunning scenery and warm hospitality, Dades Valley is not to be missed.

About Ait Ben Haddou – Morocco’s Cinematic Fortress

One of the most iconic landmarks in Morocco, Ksar Ait Ben Haddou is a striking UNESCO World Heritage Site located along the ancient caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. This fortified village, made entirely of clay and straw, showcases some of the best-preserved examples of southern Moroccan architecture.

The ksar is built into a hillside and consists of multiple kasbahs and traditional earthen homes. Walking through its narrow alleys feels like stepping back in time. You can climb to the top of the structure for panoramic views over the Ounila Valley, with its patchwork of date palms and arid mountains.

Ait Ben Haddou is also famous in popular culture. It has served as a filming location for major Hollywood productions like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Despite its cinematic fame, the village retains a peaceful charm, and several families still live within the old walls.

A visit to Ait Ben Haddou is a cultural and visual highlight of any Moroccan tour, it brings together ancient architecture, dramatic landscapes, and a rich blend of history and legend.

About the Tizi N’Tichka Pass – Crossing the High Atlas Mountains

The journey from southern Morocco to Marrakech includes an unforgettable drive through the Tizi N’Tichka Pass, one of the highest mountain passes in North Africa. At an elevation of 2,260 meters, this winding road carves its way through the High Atlas Mountains, offering some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the country.

Built by the French in the 1930s, the Tizi N’Tichka (meaning “pasture pass” in Tamazight) is an engineering marvel that connects the desert with the imperial city of Marrakech. The road is paved and well-maintained, but its switchbacks and high-altitude views make it a thrilling experience for travelers.

Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, shepherds tending to flocks, and roadside cooperatives selling argan oil, fossils, and handicrafts. On clear days, the views stretch for miles, from snow-capped peaks to deep valleys below.

Whether you’re descending into Marrakech or climbing toward the mountains, the Tizi N’Tichka Pass provides a breathtaking transition between Morocco’s desert landscapes and the vibrant city life that awaits.

About Marrakech – The Red City of Energy and Enchantment

Ending your tour in Marrakech, you’ll find yourself in one of Morocco’s most vibrant and enchanting cities. Known as the Red City for its distinctive rose-hued buildings, Marrakech is a dazzling mix of old-world charm and contemporary flair. It is a place where ancient souks, luxury riads, bustling plazas, and tranquil gardens coexist in a whirlwind of color, sound, and flavor.

At the heart of Marrakech lies Jemaa el-Fnaa, a UNESCO-listed square that transforms dramatically from day to night. In the morning, it’s a marketplace full of juice stalls, snake charmers, and henna artists. By evening, it becomes a stage for musicians, storytellers, and food vendors grilling up local delicacies under glowing lanterns.

The city’s medina is home to some of Morocco’s most exquisite architecture, such as the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs. For a more serene experience, visitors can explore the Majorelle Garden or the recently restored Le Jardin Secret.

Marrakech is not just a destination, it’s an experience. A place that stimulates all the senses and leaves travelers with a head full of stories and a suitcase full of souvenirs. It’s the perfect ending to a journey that began in the ancient lanes of Fes and passed through the magic of the Moroccan desert.
