Program of the 3-day Morocco desert trip to Erg Chegaga

Day 1: Marrakech to Agdez

The three-day Morocco desert trip to Chegaga Dunes begins with a pick-up from your Marrakech hotel at 8 a.m., and then travel for a journey to the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N’Ticheka pass at 2260 meters. We will deviate from the main road to visit the Kasbah at Telouet, which belonged to the Glaoui family’s Basha of Marrakech. After the last Pasha fled, it now stands in glorious ruins. Following the Ounila Valley, we arrive at the historic Kasbahs of Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous Kasbah, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We had lunch at a restaurant on the newly paved connecting road. After that, we continue south to Agdez, where the Draa Valley begins, and spend the night in a local Kasbah.

Day 2: Agdez to Erg Chegaga Dunes

You can explore the rest of the Kasbah after breakfast before we take the ancient caravan road between the river and the mountains. We pass through many villages and fields typical of valley life. We drive to M’hamid, known as the desert’s gateway, for a traditional tagine lunch. The final 60 kilometers to Erg Chegaga are off-road driving through the famous Sahara Desert. When we arrive, a two-hour camel ride into the dunes to watch the sunset is planned. The Erg Chegaga dunes are magical to experience. You are far from civilization, and the silence and vastness of the sand are deafening. Dinner and lodging are provided in nomadic tents beneath the night sky.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga Dunes to Marrakesh

Our final day begins with an off-road drive through another 90 kilometers of desert, with varying scenery that includes expansive mountains, Lake Iriqui, and a visit to an area known for its ancient fossil beds. Here you will find extraordinary fossils from the Paleozoic Era when Morocco was an ancient sea nearly 540 million years ago. Lunch will be served in Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert, where you can also shower. The road back to Marrakesh is well-paved, passing through the village of Taznakht, famous for its Berber carpets. Many tourists take advantage of this and purchase rugs that are ideal for their homes. Finally, we return along the High Atlas Mountains and arrive in Marrakesh in the early evening.

This 3-day Morocco desert trip provides an excellent overview of what Morocco has to offer for a short visit.
