Learn More About the Pottery and Mosaic workshop in Fes

1. The Legacy of Fes Pottery and Mosaic

Fes is the heart of Morocco’s pottery and mosaic artistry, with a history dating back over a thousand years. Influenced by Andalusian, Berber, and Arab craftsmanship, artisans in Fes continue to use traditional methods passed down through generations. The city is especially famous for its blue and white ceramics and intricate Zellige (mosaic tilework) that adorn palaces, mosques, and riads across Morocco.

2. The Art of Zellige: Morocco’s Signature Mosaic

Zellige is a form of hand-cut mosaic tilework that features geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Artisans carefully chisel small pieces of glazed terracotta, arranging them into symmetrical designs. This technique requires patience, precision, and expertise, making it one of the most revered Moroccan crafts. You’ll see Zellige in fountains, courtyards, and the walls of famous landmarks like the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque and the Royal Palace of Fes.

How Zellige is Made:

  1. Clay Preparation – Artisans mold and dry the clay before firing it in traditional kilns.
  2. Glazing and Coloring – Tiles are dipped in natural pigments to create vibrant blues, greens, yellows, and browns.
  3. Hand Cutting (Tajmia) – Using a small hammer called a menqach, craftsmen carefully shape each tile into geometric forms.
  4. Assembly (Tarkib) – The final design is pieced together like a puzzle before being cemented into place.

3. Fes Pottery: From Clay to Masterpiece

Fes pottery is known for its delicate hand-painting, symmetrical designs, and striking cobalt blue motifs. The clay used in Fassi ceramics comes from the banks of the Sebou River and is refined before being shaped into bowls, plates, vases, and decorative tiles.

The Pottery-Making Process:

  1. Clay Molding – The clay is shaped on a potter’s wheel or by hand.
  2. First Firing – The pieces are baked in traditional wood-fired kilns.
  3. Hand-Painting – Artists use fine brushes to paint traditional Fassi patterns, including floral and arabesque designs.
  4. Glazing and Second Firing – A transparent glaze is applied to give the pottery its signature glossy finish.

4. Where to See Fes Pottery and Mosaic Art

  • The Artisanal District of Ain Nokbi – Visit this area to watch master artisans at work and see live demonstrations.

  • Dar Batha Museum – A collection of some of the finest Moroccan ceramics and mosaics.

  • The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts – Although focused on woodwork, this museum showcases beautifully tiled fountains and exhibits.
